Entry #1

"Aaron at Play" by Christine Rawcliffe
of the UK.

Classification #5
(non member amateur)
Category #6 ( baby)

This is my 23" 'Aaron' at play. I was inspired to make him by a doll friend who gave me the mould as she was unable to continue her dollmaking due to ill health. Sadly she died before I was able to complete him, so he is very special to me.
I followed the excellent painting technique and costume pattern and I used 'baby fat' pellets to fill his soft fabric body. I made a half cap wig and to complete the 'at play' theme I made a soft faux fur teddy, a felt ball and quilted mat. C. Rawcliffe

Entry #2

"Jenny" by Christine Rawcliffe
of the UK.

Classification #5
(non member amateur)
Category #13 (whatever doll, original costume)

This is my 19" 'Jenny'. I was inspired to make her by a friend who gave me the mould as she was unable to continue dollmaking due to ill health. Sadly she died before I was able to complete her so she is very special to me.

I followed the painting technique sheet and fabric body pattern. Jenny has a purchased wig but her night-gown, robe and slippers are designed and made by me. To complete her ' bedtime' theme  I made a mohair teddy and bedtime story book..

Brooke's costume was inspired by the beautiful children's clothes of yesteryear.  She wears an original costume designed by Sonia Griffin. The hand-smocked pinafore is made of pearl silk dupioni.  Her silk dupioni, plaid dress has full, puffed sleeves, a peter pan collar and a full skirt. Brooke's beret is silk, adorned with a bow matching her dress. Brooke's lingerie is an ivory, silk camisole and pantaloons adorned with ribbons and lace (patterns designed by Martha Pullen). Brooke's plush elephant is hand made with a stamped chenille, button eyes and a ribbon bow.  Brooke is 18" with a soft body.

"Manuelito"
by Jeanette Nelson

Classification #5
(DDG Apprentice)
Category #12 (Portriat Series,
Original costume)

I have portrayed Portrait #9 as a Spanish Matador, wearing the traditional bullfighter costume.  Regardless of the colors of the Matador costume, hot pink stockings are always worn.  Matador costumes are elaborate, hence the name "Suit of Lights."  I designed and made the costume, including the hat and shoes.  Over 1,000 beads were used to embellish the costume.  The "Suit of Lights" is made to fit skin tight and the shoes are heeless so as not to give the bull an area to hook his horn into. "Nicole"
by Joyce Butcher

Classification #4
(DDG Member)
Category # (Small Doll, Original Costume)

It is spring and all the beautiful flowers are coming up, it is time again for the May Pole celebration. Nicole is all dressed up for it in her new outfit that grandmother made for her.  She is a little sad because grandmother will not be able to come to the celebration.  But grandmother has said that she wants her to enjoy herself, and grandmother wants her to come home and tell her all about it.  So off she will go.

Her clothing was designed by me I used the 12" underwear pattern that I bought from Expressions to make her bloomers and corset for the dress.  I copied a sack dress bodice from The Evolution of Fashion by Margot Hamilton Hill and Peter A Bucknell.  I used it as my base and worked from there to create the over dress that is in plaid. Her shoes and hat are hand made by me. The hat I used a straw hat as the base and cut the back out to give it the open back.  She is holding velvet flowers that are also in her hat.  I did not make these. Joyce Butcher

"Little Victorian Boy"
by Shirley Ann Taylor

Classification #4
(DDG Member)
Category #13 (Whatever doll)

My Little Victorian Boy

My On-line Challenge entry is the 14" April (Portrait Series) as a little Victorian Boy. I really like that era. I think the April sculpt makes a precious little boy. I used Nedra's Pattern. I did change the coat up a little. I made the hat last. I am really glad I did because it added character to him.

I found a photo of a Victorian Stick Horse. My husband, Glenn, was able to recreate the horse as close as possible. I painted it and assembled the horse. The little boy actually holds it in his hands.

This little doll reminds me of my youngest son, Scott.
I have completed his outfit with black leather shoes.
I became extremely involved in the creation of this little boy, once i started into the process. He really came to life for me.

Thanks very much for allowing us the opportunity to do this doll. It was a challenge for me personally. I enjoyed all the detailing required of myself to complete this doll. I hope that your perception of the finished doll is up to the challenge you gave to me.

Always,

Shirley Ann Taylor
